Thattekkad Bird Sanctuary is located in Ernakulam district of Kerala near Kothamangalam. It was established in 1983 and is also known as the Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary. It is the first bird sanctuary in Kerala. The sanctuary is famous for its rich bird life, with more than 300 species of birds found here. The area has forests, rivers, and wetlands which provide a good habitat for birds. It is an important place for bird conservation and nature study.
Dr. Salim Ali was a famous Indian ornithologist, often called the “Birdman of India.” He was born on 12 November 1896 in Mumbai. From a young age, he developed a deep interest in birds and nature. He carried out many bird surveys across India and studied bird life scientifically.
Salim Ali played an important role in creating awareness about bird conservation and wildlife protection in India. His work helped in the establishment of several bird sanctuaries, including Thattekkad Bird Sanctuary in Kerala, which is named after him.
He wrote many books on birds, including The Book of Indian Birds, which made bird study popular among students and nature lovers. Dr. Salim Ali received several awards for his contributions and passed away on 20 June 1987. His work continues to inspire people to protect birds and the environment.
